Building a time machine

Year 9 Half Day School are looking at Time as a concept and a theme (and an abstract concept as far as getting out of bed at the weekend goes!) Here they are making a time machine (that measures exactly 20 seconds) using the Engineering Design Process

  • Define the problem
  • Do the background research
  • Specify requirements
  • Create alternative solutions
  • Choose best solution
  • Do development work
  • Build prototype
  • Test and redesign

Designers frequently jump around the design process and going back to earlier steps is common and expected. This is called iteration. The time machine must measure 20 seconds three times, so Habit of Mind “accuracy and precision” is key here.
